About

Joanne Duklas

Joanne Duklas’s work explores the intersections of memory and the human experience, often using abstracted nature themes and mixed media to evoke a sense of time and place. Her practice is deeply rooted in an exploration of her own personal and emotional experiences with the world around her or that of others for private commissions with an emphasis on the layers of meaning that emerge from these moments. By employing materials that range from acrylic paint, mediums, watercolour, plaster and other mediums, Duklas creates textured paintings on watercolour paper, canvas or wood panels that invite the viewer to consider both the visible and invisible life moments that shape our lives. She works with her hands, palette knives, sponges, brushes and other tools to create depth and layers.

Her compositions are grounded in a contemplative engagement with the physical world—an expression of how objects, colors, and forms can mirror emotional states and the complexity of the human condition. Each piece becomes a dialogue between the artist and her materials, revealing connections to memory and the narratives that inform her creative process. Through her work, Duklas strives to create spaces where viewers can reflect on their own stories and experiences, encouraging a deeper connection to the moments that define us.

In her most recent works, Duklas continues to push the boundaries of abstraction, focusing on how forms and textures can communicate both individual and universal truths. Her process is one of constant discovery, where each layer and gesture brings a new understanding of the world around her, creating a visual language that is both personal and universal. Through her art, Duklas seeks to create an open-ended conversation, inviting the viewer to engage with their own interpretations and emotional responses.
